An untapped resource

#1

Post by Lovegun »

Although magnet fishing has been around for quite some time it seems to be gaining more steam especially during the beginning of the pandemic. I have seen a few videos but saw this one and really sparked my interest even more. I sent this video to Keith and then thought I would post here since everyone has access in their own backyard to lakes ponds and rivers that have been there a long time and not really something that will infringe on others turf. So I have been doing my homework on gear technique etc and plan to try my luck this summer. Anyone else here tried it yet? I think we are missing a untapped resource...

I think I read somewhere along the way that magnet fishing is illegal in Europe (because they are fearful that you will accidentally blow yourself up with whatever you might retrieve from under the water left over from the war)????

You definitely need to have a boat to do this....

Every video I have seen including this one, they are on shore, (bank, dock, bridge, etc.)
Yes a boat would gain more access but you can fish without one.

I bought one a few years ago. I really had no luck from shore or from my boat. I retrieved some tools and a lot of fishing hooks. Got the most stuff near a boat launch. Not one beer can though.

When I tried this from shore, I kept snagging trees and debris and almost lost my magnet. Using a boat, you can drop it straight down which I think is the way to go.

I get your thinking Ed.
Unfortunately with my wife's health, traveling to Ahos to dig or long distances to shows or being gone more than a couple of days is not an option anymore for me. With that being said, I am game for trying something I can do closer to home.
Appreciate everybody's feedback!

having dove in plenty of nasty spots all over Florida I've only seen really rough cans, or partial cans, and only 50s on national brands... Have had some real luck with tons of early coke bottles though.

IF going the magnet route you can get pretty heavy duty kevlar lines- even just 100ft, fairly cheap on ebay
Interested in breweriana with Native American images or language of all kinds.
