Charlie Bacon's quarts
Morning folks,
I've been tasked with selling the late Charlie Bacon's collection, and wanted to give everyone a heads up now that things are starting to move.
The bulk of his quarts just went live on Jeff Lebo's CanSmart auctions yesterday:
https://auctions.cansmartbeercans.com/c ... ctionid=60
For many years Charlie had the largest quart collection around, and was the first to reach the 300 Club. Other than 2 Ballantine downgrades and a few dull gray Hanley's from a dump we dug some 15 years ago, every single can in there is a different variation. There are a number that you simply don't see, at least a decade at a time between appearances. If you're looking for variations and affordable killer labels, I encourage you to take a look.
There will be at least two more full auctions of flats and cones, as well as exotic cans trickling out on other auction sites.
Coming up at Spring Thaw, I'll have his Ballantine breweriana, bottles, crowns, glassware, and many tabs to pick through. Please note special events like a silent auction and an Ironguts-sponsored vintage Ballantine tasting to be held there! For anyone wondering why we're doing it this way, you're welcome to contact me directly. It's always a balancing act: making items available to everyone, helping the family as much as possible, logistics, and my own sanity all come into play. This has all been a bitter pill to swallow, and the challenge is to try to make a celebration of it instead of a depressing slog. Charlie' s joke was always that there should be a brass band to play for a month so we'll have music in the room. Memorial stickers will go on his quarts and I'll have a few extras on request for items at the show.

Re: Charlie Bacon's quarts
I for one have been doing a LOT of thinking about how to sell off my own collection a bit at a time, so that my wife and my kids aren't burdened with doing it. I am 100% confident you are making the best of it, balancing your time and their financial benefit and our access to his goodies. My best to you and to his family. I'm planning on being an active bidder on March 18!

Re: Charlie Bacon's quarts
For the Iron Guts, appropriately, I have a full Pabst quart. Please let me know if you want me to bring it.
Thanx.

Re: Charlie Bacon's quarts
Thanks guys. When you stare at something like this it's quickly clear that any number of people will be disappointed no matter how you handle it.
As far as the Pabst, I'd take a sip but not necessary to save it for this event. "Pabst/Milwaukee" is probably one of the very earliest entries on Hank Spalinger's dot matrix spreadsheet... The hard part is finding new (old!) brewery/beer combinations to add to the list. We've got bona fide Burton Ale among other fun stuff. I suspect that's the crowd that'll show, or the cap collectors waiting to buy them the instant they're pried off.
And another thing, I was delighted to find out there is no official way to become ironguts approved. You just do it. it's an organization that doesn't step on any of its members!

Re: Charlie Bacon's quarts
First, I've seen collections that were sold off, and it's a tough and sad job. Much thanks for what you're doing.
In other news:
Police have identified a suspect in the Schmidt Bock quart shooting. Approach with caution.

Re: Charlie Bacon's quarts
While watching the auction I was watching Youtube videos on can cleaning and came across a dig with Charlie Bacon.
I was able to see who he was during his auction.
I have had the cap for the Duquesne Can-o-beer quart cone for 30(?) years, it is lighter and not woodgrained like the 12 oz can.
I have only seen 3 or 4 of this can for sale and they were all very nice examples, well out of my can price range.
I was able to pick up the dumper one in this auction, first I have ever seen.
