Nice, there are quite a few that interest me this time, including some tough labels from Neil Kanetzke's collection.

The 7/11 from Norfolk is a rubout LEON, I did the work on that can.
Could have hit the rim area a little better with a toothpick. The ink blemish on the side gave me a headache. Is the Brucks Jspout a Lockheed rubout? Ziphippie

The Brucks Jubilee has a rub and some signs at the seam which make me think it is a rubout. I've started threads on this variation here a few times over the years and have brought it up with many collectors separately also. The auction example is one I was unaware of. I knew of 12 examples total previously - seven rubouts (including a dumper), a converted mug, three additional dumpers and an indoor can Dan Morean sold at auction which appeared to be all-original.

Below is a link to a fairly recent discussion spurred by the mug turning up and being converted.

That explains why the Metbrew just got $800.00

Any time you get to add something to your collection, it's a good day. Congratulations!

Looks like somebody (11th bid) retracted their bid after realizing the 7/11 was once a Metbrew; price dropped from 3,450 to 3,000. Must have been somebody who was alerted maybe from this thread? Still commanded a pretty good price for an unoriginal 7/11!😳

Unused body blanks were painted over by the canning companies, sometimes with another beer label and sometimes with shoe polish or automotive product labels. Once collectors figured this out, guys started learning how to remove the top layer of paint to get at the original can underneath. The results can be shockingly good. Here's a link to a long thread where guys show their results at "rubbing out" cans.

Rubout is simply another term for a paint over. If you're still not sure, see this thread.

Rubouts Man.... you can wait years for a set up like that to come along and what do you guys do.... Tell him straight....

Here we had a chance to let it out that beer can collectors were taking people out with heavy old cans like mobsters of the collectible world.. I mean, I got 3 stiches in the back of my head from a Schmidt can half full of water when I was a kid.

but nooooooo.... sigh..... sad in Florida

I can't speak for Jim, but I'm just in a good mood. I went to a show this weekend and actually purchased two cans - I hadn't bought a can at a show since Canvention in St. Louis. Then I won a can on eBay Saturday, a rarity for me in recent years, and I won two more from the Good Guys auction yesterday. They're all upgrades but I upgraded three J-Spouts, a Bock OI and a full-length opener can. It took me until the end of July to score six cans last year, and I'm already there this year, plus I scored five cans late last year. It's almost like old times . . .

Hi Marc, very nice to hear about your pick ups. Was talking Js and you with Jim R a few days ago.... I was the 3rd man down the line benificiery of a couple of your upgraded cans that he got and then traded his old ones to me at the Orlando show in 22. For mini bottles of course.... Sort of legacy items I guess.

I had a cardboard box that was with Dave Launts stuff that had been sent to 2 other RB'ers by the time I got it and so I used it to send to another- I told the story to that person who I am forgetting but wonder if that box is still being sent around among us???

The answer seems pretty obvious to me . . .

Caveat emptor -- and check this Forum regularly for pertinent information that's not disclosed in sales listings.

Is it possible to retract a bid? I always thought it would be good to see the bidding history, but that's another story. I did a max bid by error. Won the auction, but most like would have same some cash letting the site manage my bidding.

GG's auction rules state that, "A bid cannot be cancelled or retracted once you place it." Their rules also state that, "All sales are final" and "There are no returns."

Morean Auctions and Tavern Trove's rules do not contain non-cancellation language and do allow absentee and internet bidders to return items if there's "a material error, omission or inaccuracy in the photographs and/or description."

That’s fine but how do you explain the above screenshots which first show 11 bids at $3,450 and then the final result of 10 bids at $3,000? 🤔

Thanks, Andy. Jim was one of the first guys I got to know once I started getting to shows outside my home area and he used to work for a company that did business with an engineering company five miles from me, so he's been over to hang out and see the collection a couple times and a fair number of cans have been exchanged over the years. It's nice to know what he's doing with his downgrades!

Lieutenant Columbo might surmise that the auctioneer was aware of the paint-over issue -- presumably from discussion on this Forum, if not otherwise -- and agreed to let the unhappy bidder withdraw their bid (even though their auction rules don’t obligate them to do so).

The can did sell for $3450 which is $3000 + Buyers Premium. There were no bids retracted. As far as being a rub out situation goes Pbama did bring it to Dan’s attention. Dan happened to disagree. Not sure what the whole backstory is, but I was told by another source this weekend at the Hoosier show that there were 3 of these found that were paint overs.

Here is the complete bid history. Note that there are 11 bids. 10 bids were placed. Note the time of the eleventh bid. The auction does not officially close until it is reconciled which consists of the auctioneer entering the final bid price of all items and closing the session. You guys are so hell bent on everything being a conspiracy. I wish that there was a way to disclose the complete bid history with names for every lot but that crosses the lines of buyer privacy.

This whole thread made me chuckle. Thank you for the simple explanation.
There are more out there. Zoinkss sold his recently at the Bullfrog show and another Metbrew sold this past Sunday with blue #446 left of seam in a group of cans for just over $100. I watched it go cheap as I have a couple 7/11 rubouts from Norfolk. The can in the middle (not my can) is the one that sold- Ziphippie

What is there to “disagree” about? Ziphippie clearly (and repeatedly) stated that the can is a paint-over/rub out. He knows this with absolute certainty because HE PERFORMED THE RUBOUT WORK on the can. Case closed.

It’s troubling that the auctioneer ignored this information, even after they were directly notified of the facts. That’s precisely the kind of behavior that will generate worrisome conspiracy theories.

Honesty’s the best policy. Give it a try.

The 7 11 might be a good jump off for a poll= I kinda think the rubouts make them more interesting. I get never filled etc.... But If I had to pick rubout over rolled I guess I would go that way (while admitting I buiilt my collection on rolled cans). Dooh stuck o9o9n this screen and can't see who just said Fess up and say its a rubout... but as always being up front about it makes better informed bidders.....

I was just stating what I know , I don’t do the can descriptions. To be called dishonest for stating what I knew is a little ridiculous. But that is ok. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

It’s an observation, not an opinion. What would you call it? Nondisclosure of material facts? Deceit? Profits over principles? Take your pick.

It seems you want to distance yourself from the organization you are a part of, which is understandable. At the same time, you hold yourself out as spokesperson, point the finger at others and offer up feeble excuses. As Hemmings succinctly put it, Fess Up.
