1st, 2nd & 3rd Attempt at De-Denting

#1

Post by DaveNH »

After searching for the right pipe I finally found it and after re-reading the detailed post on de-denting about 5 times I gave it a try yesterday. The hardest part to understand was grinding the bottom of the can until a "line appears". After a couple of attempts that turned out to be way easier than I thought it would be. While, I have a long way to go to perfect the technique I think I'm on the right track. See some of my before and after photos. If you click the photo it should flip and be right side up.

Practice, practice, practice. It's a continually evolving process. I'm using my Dremel with a cutoff wheel for the final grind once the "line" appears now. The Boylston "taco" came out nice!

Thanks guys for the nice responses. I'm a woodworker so if figured I could do it, but wanted the right pipe and tools before taking the plunge. I really need to give a shout out to Scott Rollert for his detailed description/post on de denting a can from the inside out. Without his post on the process It would have been a lot harder to tackle. So thanks a bunch Scott!!!
Thanks. Dave

There's a certain satisfaction you get when you save a can. I just did a Wisconsin Private Club I got at the Mile Hi picnic. When I removed the lid, there were pieces of a Black Cat inside. When that didn't work they tried a screwdriver. When that didn't work it was time to jettison the can. It now stands straight and tall ready for some ones shelf.

And thanks for the shout out. Maybe one of these days I'll do an update with a couple of new tips I'm using now. If anyone has some tips they'd like to share, please feel free to post them.

Well now that I think about it it probably doesn't matter. But I always thought a pipe would vibrate more than a piece of round stock when struck with a hammer which would make the quality of the work decrease (or take longer to fix).
I'm lucky to have the tools I have. That's all I'm gonna say.
