Pair of way early California beer cdvs . Will edit this when I can look in the Scott book but those stamps should mean 1863-1866/7. Will check the photographers dates too. I've followed Jack's stuff for years- I suspect he thinks they are unique to put them at this price.

Benicia's oldest brewery in AM Brew II is only 1874 and as Benicia Brewery only 1880-1884. But there is a real problem with the known brewery dates-
The 1c propietary stamp looks like a Series 1 (R3 R1 1c) that could be used like this after Dec 25, 1862 and discontinued in 1871.
If the photographer is indeed Silas Selleck (c1828 to 1885) then these must be pre 1876 as he sold off his negatives and materials that year.
There is a good amount known about him and his CDV's are known to be available- his earlier works are pretty rare.
All of this seems to make these photo's all the more interesting as the stamp was no longer being made at least 13 years before the Brewery is said to open, and the presumed photographer sold his stuff off 8 years before the brewery "opened" too....
A California specialist must have a better answer than this??? Andy

I do not have any answers for you but I do have a question. What does CDV stand for? Thanks.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Carte de visite: A carte de visite is a photograph mounted on a piece of card the size of a formal visiting card—hence the name. The format was patented by the French photographer Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819–89) in 1854. Most professional portrait photographers of the 1850s took either daguerreotypes or collodion positives.pinnacle-project wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 5:13 pm I do not have any answers for you but I do have a question. Thanks Marc- sorry I didn't make that clear.... Hard to positively say the brewery is that much older than thought but sure looks that way.
I have really gotten into trying to find Breweriana of any kind that pre dates 1870. Sort of come to the conclusion that its about an order of magnitude harder to push back each decade from there. I have a couple letterheads back to 1830s now which are getting to be close to 200 years old. Have tavern/brewery licenses from 1705 (2) and a 1708 too. now those are old!

Whew.. Thanks Keith. you bailed me out there- I knew it had to be older than 1874 but was running out of places to find more info...
A kinda crazy Marysville aside- about this time 1870s, maybe a bit later. Someone found a cache of obsidian Clovis points there, circa 13,000 years old. They got give to the Smithsonian, who up to the 1960s or so would give a point away to kids who wanted one. My buddy who worked there found the last one in the box and grabbed it and chased down what little of the story survived... No one knew how important they were so they gave them away.
